Why rain works at night

Rain is steady and soft like pink noise, but it sounds like weather instead of a machine. Its endless small variations give your mind something gentle to rest on, and its steady wash covers the sounds that might wake you. For many people, it’s simply the sound of a good night’s sleep.

Tips for sleeping to rain

  • Keep thunder low or off. A loud crack can wake you. The rainy night preset keeps it distant.
  • Fill the gaps with brown noise. It covers low sounds like traffic that rain alone may not.
  • Volume just above the room. At or below about 50 decibels; you should still hear someone speaking normally. A 2026 sleep-lab study found pink noise at 50 decibels all night reduced REM sleep 1, and a 2021 review rated the evidence for noise as a sleep aid very low 2, so quieter is better.
  • Use the timer if you only need help falling asleep: it fades out over the last minute. MoodNoise Pro adds timers of any length with slow fades and playback with your phone locked.

Rain vs white noise for sleep

White noise masks voices more strongly; rain is softer and more natural. If you sleep near a noisy street, add pink noise to the rain for a stronger mask that still sounds like rain. More choices on sleep sounds.

Watch: keep playing with your phone locked

Step by step: keep playing with your phone locked

  1. Phones pause web audio. When a phone locks, it stops sound made by web pages. That’s the browser, not MoodNoise.
  2. Tap Locked screen. With Pro, tap Locked screen. MoodNoise turns your mix into a seamless audio loop in a few seconds.
  3. Lock it. It keeps going. Lock the phone and the mix plays on, with play and pause on the lock screen. The sleep timer still fades it out.

Questions

Are rain sounds good for sleep?

Many people sleep better with them, mainly because they mask sudden noises and are pleasant to listen to. Keep the volume low.

Can I play rain sounds all night?

Yes, with the page open. The free timer goes up to an hour; Pro adds longer timers and keeps it playing with your phone locked.

Should I add thunder?

For sleep, keep thunder low or off: a close crack can wake you. Distant thunder at 15 to 25 is gentle.
