What brown noise sounds like

Brown noise is noise with most of its energy down low. It sounds like a distant waterfall, heavy surf heard from indoors, or the roar inside a plane: deep and rounded, with almost no hiss. Many people who find white noise grating find brown noise calming.

It isn’t named after the color. It’s named after Robert Brown, the botanist who described the random jiggling of tiny particles in water, called Brownian motion1. A sound wave that wanders the same way has this deep, soft character. Some people call it red noise.

Why so many people like it

  • It’s easy to listen to for hours. With little high-frequency energy, there’s nothing sharp to tire your ears.
  • It covers low noise well. Traffic rumble, a neighbor’s TV, a dryer, the bass from next door: low sounds are hard to mask with white noise and much easier with brown.
  • It feels calm. Lots of people, including many with ADHD, describe brown noise as quieting a busy mind. That’s personal experience rather than proven science: a 2024 meta-analysis of noise and attention found no studies of brown noise at all 2. But it’s why the sound became so popular.

Getting the best from it

  1. Use headphones or a decent speaker. Tiny phone speakers can’t play deep sound, so brown noise can seem faint through them. Earbuds or any speaker with some bass do it justice.
  2. Add a little pink if it feels muffled. 10 to 20 on the pink slider adds a touch of air without the hiss.
  3. For sleep, keep it low and set a timer. See brown noise for sleep.
  4. For focus, try it with rain. See brown noise for studying for mixes that work.

Brown, pink and white noise compared

All three are random noise; they differ in how the energy is spread. White noise has equal energy at every frequency. Pink noise falls by half (3 dB) each octave up. Brown noise falls by a quarter (6 dB) each octave, so it’s the deepest of the three. The comparison white noise vs brown noise covers when to pick which, and what is brown noise? explains the science in plain words.

How MoodNoise makes it

Our brown noise is generated in your browser by a random walk that is gently pulled back toward silence, which gives a true 6 dB per octave slope across the range you hear. It’s checked by an automatic test every time the site is built. Because it’s generated rather than recorded, there’s no loop point to hear, and it plays offline once the page has loaded.

Keep it quiet. Background sound works at a low level: about as loud as a soft shower or a quiet conversation across the room. If you have to raise your voice over it, turn it down. For comparison, the workplace limit NIOSH recommends is 85 decibels averaged over 8 hours 3; background sound should be far below that. For sleep, lower is better, and keep phones and speakers away from your pillow.

Questions

What is brown noise good for?

People use it to mask low sounds like traffic and voices through walls, to fall asleep, and to focus. It’s softer than white noise, so it’s easier to listen to for long periods.

Is brown noise better than white noise?

Neither is better for everyone. Brown noise is deeper and gentler; white noise is brighter and better at covering high sounds like voices. Many people prefer brown for sleep and long sessions. Try both here and switch with one tap.

Does brown noise help with ADHD?

Many people with ADHD say brown noise helps them focus. A 2024 meta-analysis of 13 studies found white and pink noise gave a small benefit on attention tasks for people with ADHD, but it found no studies of brown noise. Think of it as worth trying, not as a treatment.

Why can’t I hear brown noise on my phone?

Phone speakers can’t reproduce low frequencies well, and brown noise is mostly low frequencies. Use earbuds, headphones or a speaker, or add some pink noise so there’s more for the small speaker to play.

Can I download brown noise?

With MoodNoise Pro you can download any mix as a WAV file: a one-minute seamless loop or a 20-minute file. The player itself works offline after your first visit.
